I started my martial arts training in Kung Fu with Kevin Chan for about 8 months. The training was hard, and Kevin Chan is a master of his art.

However, I took my daughter to a karate class that was advertised in my local paper. I used to watch the kids class and then stayed on to watch the adults. I found all the bag work, the high kicks, and the level of contact fascinating and very real. I decided to join in 1994.

The training with Sensei Brian Dineen was incredibly hard, however the realistic approach to situations one may encounter on the street kept me going back for more. I gained my black belt on the 16th December 1999. The grading was very intense however the adrenalin that was flowing through me just kept driving me onwards towards my goal of achieving the coveted black belt.

I achieved my 1st Dan in 2002 again at our dojo in South Croydon. I have just achieved my 2nd Dan on the 25th September 2005. This grading was particularly difficult. I shall give details of this grading later.

Just to whet your appetite it started at us meeting at 8am at our South Croydon dojo on a Sunday. Then driving to an old ruin for kihon, and then to the beach at Dymchurch for the rest of the grading. It was very.... Well wait for it!

In October 2001, I decided to open my club by holding a demo at the Nanak Centre, and in turn expand Kyoikenkai Fighting Karate. The demonstration was a huge success. We enrolled a total of 23 pupils that day.

Four years on, the club is now very strong. The foundations of our club are very solid. There have been many issues on the way to achieving this success, but due to our strong foundations we have held our own. We have a very hard core of students, and news ones are joining all the time.

I am registered with the BKA, and in all honesty I can say that the BKA is run very professionally, and thank you to Sensei Brian Seabright for all his support and advice when I have needed it. Osu.

More about me later. Now you must read the history of my true friend, club Sensei and training partner who you all know as Sensei Stuart Lockwood.
